Head’s Message

Welcome to Avenue Junior School!

Avenue School was built in 1893, and has had a long and proud tradition of educating children in the local community. This lovely Victorian building has seen many changes over its many years! It is currently a four-form entry Junior School with capacity for 480 pupils aged between 7 and 11 years.

We are very proud of all our children. The staff work extremely hard to provide a rich, exciting and varied curriculum and our children respond enthusiastically to all the opportunities offered to them! We are proud to be a School of Sanctuary and we are committed to our role in helping create a more equal society including our work towards becoming an Anti-Racist School.

Our children are open, tolerant and caring of one another, they are individuals and respect differences. They are creative in their approach to education and we seek to encourage and develop this as they move with us through the school. We also have a dedicated and talented staff who educate and care for our pupils to a very high standard. Our pastoral care system supports the positive learning environment we want to create in our school. Our SENDCO works closely with the Parent Support Advisor, pastoral team and outside agencies to ensure all children who need extra support receive it.

In September 2021 we begin a new partnership with Recreation Road School as the Heigham Community Federation with a new, excellent Governing Board who will work across both schools. This is an exciting move for both schools. Find out more about this here.

Avenues is very much a part of the local community and we work hard to develop good links with our parents, the community and many other local groups. Our PTA is fantastic and provides an excellent range of activities for children, parents and the community throughout the year, not only to provide extra funds for the school but for your entertainment too!

We have a long and established tradition of good learning and teaching at the school, indeed many of our parents were pupils themselves, and their parents too! Children flourish at Avenues and the staff work hard to ensure that every child has the opportunity to enjoy and achieve to the best of their potential. Our school has a well-deserved reputation for excellent music and performing arts and we have fantastic choirs, a wonderful orchestra, Wind Bands, String Groups and excellent specialist music teaching.

We have a well-stocked lending library and a dedicated librarian who arranges exciting visits from a range of fantastic authors. Although we do not have a playing field on site, we have 3 large outdoor playing areas, two halls and a purpose-built Sports Hall is a short walk away on Recreation Road. Our Victorian building has fabulous high ceilings, wonderful wooden floors, impressive halls and a viewing gallery – all adding up to fantastic character!

Our staff and children thoroughly enjoy their time here and we feel privileged to lead such an exciting and vibrant school.
